Description This book concentrates upon the mathematical theory of plasticity and fracture as opposed to the physical theory of these fields, and is presented in the thermomechanical framework. It follows the macroscopic, phenomenological approach which proposes equations abstracted from generally accepted experimental facts, studies the adequacy of the consequences drawn from these equations to those facts and then provides useful tools for designers and engineers.
The material is drawn from the author's graduate course in Europe and the United States and may be used to form the basis for similar graduate courses on plasticity and fracture. Many worked examples are presented and each chapter concludes with problems for students. The book will thus undoubtedly establish itself as a core text for both students and researchers.

Chapters 13 and 14 are dedicated to different applications of solid and fluid mechanics, respectively. The rest of the chapters involve some advanced topics. Chapter 15 is dedicated to turbulence, one of the main challenges in fluid mechanics. Chapter 16 deals with electro-magneto active materials a coupled theory.
Chapter 17 deals with specific ideas of soft matter and chapter 18 deals with configurational forces. In chapter 19, constitutive equations are introduced in a general implicit form.
Well-posedness existence, time of existence, uniqueness, continuity of the equations of the mechanics of continua is an important topic which involves sophisticated mathematical machinery. Chapter 20 presents different analyses related to these topics. Continuum Mechanics is an interdisciplinary subject that attracts the attention of engineers, mathematicians, physicists, etc.
Download The Mechanics And Thermodynamics Of Continua books , The Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Continua presents a unified treatment of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics that emphasizes the universal status of the basic balances and the entropy imbalance. These laws are viewed as fundamental building blocks on which to frame theories of material behavior.
As a valuable reference source, this book presents a detailed and complete treatment of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics for graduates and advanced undergraduates in engineering, physics, and mathematics. Download Configurational Forces books , Exploring recent developments in continuum mechanics, Configurational Forces: Thermomechanics, Physics, Mathematics, and Numerics presents the general framework for configurational forces.
It also covers a range of applications in engineering and condensed matter physics. In the chapter on complex continua, he compares the classical perspective of B. Coleman and W. Noll with the viewpoint linked to abstract field theory. He then describes the important notion of local structural rearrangement and its relationship to Eshelby stress. After looking at the relevance of Eshelby stress in the thermodynamic description of singular interfaces, the text focuses on fracture problems, microstructured media, systems with mass exchanges, and electromagnetic deformable media.
The concluding chapters discuss the exploitation of the canonical conservation law of momentum in nonlinear wave propagation, the application of canonical-momentum conservation law and material force in numerical schemes, and similarities of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Written by a long-time researcher in mechanical engineering, this book provides a detailed treatment of the theory of configurational forces—one of the latest and most fruitful advances in macroscopic field theories.
Through many applications, it shows the depth and efficiency of this theory. Download Non Equilibrium Thermodynamics With Application To Solids books , This book puts emphasis on developing the basic ideas behind the different approaches to non-equilibrium thermodynamics and on applying them to solids.
After a survey about different approaches an introduction to their common fundamentals is given in the first part. In the second part the mechanical behavior of special materials such as viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, viscoelastoplasticity, and thermoplasticity are discussed. The third part is devoted to extended thermodynamics. The basic ideas, phenomenological as well as microscopical, are reviewed and applied to thermo- and viscoelastic materials.
Electromagnetic solids showing dielectric relaxation, such as ceramics, showing electromagneto-mechanical hysteresis and superconductivity are treated in the fourth part. In the last part stability with regard to constitutive equations is investigated. Especially stability of quasi-static processes and of elastic-plastic systems are discussed.
Download Advanced Methods Of Continuum Mechanics For Materials And Structures books , This volume presents a collection of contributions on advanced approaches of continuum mechanics, which were written to celebrate the 60th birthday of Prof.
Holm Altenbach. The contributions are on topics related to the theoretical foundations for the analysis of rods, shells and three-dimensional solids, formulation of constitutive models for advanced materials, as well as development of new approaches to the modeling of damage and fractures.
Download A Geometric Approach To Thermomechanics Of Dissipating Continua books , Across the centuries, the development and growth of mathematical concepts have been strongly stimulated by the needs of mechanics. Vector algebra was developed to describe the equilibrium of force systems and originated from Stevin's experiments Vector analysis was then introduced to study velocity fields and force fields.
Classical dynamics required the differential calculus developed by Newton Nevertheless, the concept of particle acceleration was the starting point for introducing a structured spacetime. Instantaneous velocity involved the set of particle positions in space. Download The Mechanics And Thermodynamics Of Continua books , The Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Continua presents a unified treatment of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics that emphasises the universal status of the basic balances and the entropy imbalance.
These laws are viewed as fundamental building blocks on which to frame theories of material behaviour. As a valuable reference source, this book presents a detailed and complete treatment of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics for graduates and advanced undergraduates in engineering, physics and mathematics.
The chapters on plasticity discuss the standard isotropic theories and, in addition, crystal plasticity and gradient plasticity.
Haslach Jr. The book develops a general technique created in order to construct nonlinear evolution equations describing non-equilibrium processes, while also developing a geometric context for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
Solid materials are the main focus in this volume, but the construction is shown to also apply to fluids. Since the last edition of this book, many important results in this field have been published. This new edition refers to the most important results. The part on hyperelastic models and anisotropic yield criteria has been enlarged and an outlook on Material Plasticity has been added. Download Plasticity And Geotechnics books , Plasticity and Geotechnics is the first attempt to summarize and present in a single volume the major achievements in the field of plasticity theory for geotechnical materials and its applications to geotechnical analysis and design.
Download Thermomechanical Behavior Of Dissipative Composite Materials books , Thermomechanical Behavior of Dissipative Composite Materials presents theoretical and numerical tools for studying materials and structures under fully coupled thermomechanical conditions, focusing primarily on composites. The authors cover many aspects of the modeling process and provide the reader with the knowledge required to identify the conservation laws and thermodynamic principles that must be respected by most solid materials.
The book also covers construct constitutive laws for various types of dissipative processes, both rate-independent and rate-dependent, by utilizing a rigorous thermodynamic framework. Topics explored are useful for graduate students and advanced researchers who wish to strengthen their knowledge of the application of thermodynamic principles.
Identifies the conservation laws and thermodynamic principles that need to be respected by any solid material Presents construct, proper constitutive laws for various types of dissipative processes, both rate-independent and rate-dependent, by utilizing an appropriate thermodynamic framework Includes robust numerical algorithms that permit accuracy and efficiency in the calculations of very complicated constitutive laws Uses rigorous homogenization theories for materials and structures with both periodic and random microstructure.
A body in continuum mechanics is considered to be matter continuously distributed in space. Hence, no attention is given to the microscopic atomic structure of real materials although non-classical generalized theories of continuum mechanics are able to deal with the mesoscopic structure of matter i.
Matter occupies space in time and the response of a body in continuum mechanics is restricted to the Newtonian space-time of classical mechanics in this volume. In the classical sense, loading is considered as any action that changes the motion of the body.
This includes, for instance, a change in temperature or a force applied. By introducing the concept of configurational forces a load may also be considered as a force that drives a change in the material space, for example the opening of a crack. Continuum mechanics refers to field descriptions of phenomena that are usually modeled by partial differential equations and, from a mathematical point of view, require non-standard knowledge of non-simple technicalities. One purpose in this volume has been to present the different subjects in a self-contained way for a general audience.
The organization of the volume is as follows. Mathematically, to predict the response of a body it is necessary to formulate boundary value problems governed by balance laws.
The theme of the volume, that is an overview of the subject, has been written with this idea in mind for beginners in the topic. Chapter 1 is an introduction to continuum mechanics based on a one-dimensional framework in which, simultaneously, a more detailed organization of the chapters of this volume is given.
A one-dimensional approach to continuum mechanics in some aspects maybe misleading since the analysis is oversimplified. Nevertheless, it allows us to introduce the subject through the early basic steps of the continuum analysis for a general audience.
Chapters 3, 4 and 5 are devoted to the mathematical setting of continuum analysis: kinematics, balance laws and thermodynamics, respectively. Chapters 6 and 7 are devoted to constitutive equations.
